♨ Sublimation Printing — Permanent, Photo-Quality, Full-Color

Dye sublimation on polyester apparel, ceramic mugs, aluminum photo panels, mouse pads, license plates, and dozens of polymer-coated blanks. Print becomes part of the substrate.

Why Sublimation Is Different From Every Other Print Method

The print is not on the surface — it is the surface itself.

Sublimation is a process unlike any other in our shop, and it is the only one that does not actually leave ink sitting on top of a substrate. Instead, sublimation uses heat and pressure to transform solid dye directly into a gas, which then permeates the polymer fibers of polyester or the polymer coating of a sublimation blank, where it cools and re-solidifies as part of the substrate itself. The result is a print that is genuinely permanent in the molecular sense — you cannot scratch it off, wash it off, or wear it down because it is not a layer on top, it is part of the material. This is why sublimation dominates polyester apparel decoration, ceramic mug printing, photo panel production, and any application where the print needs to survive heavy use, dishwashers, or industrial laundry.

The catch is that sublimation only works on two categories of substrate. The first is polyester, where the dye gas bonds with the polyester fibers; cotton does not work because cotton fibers cannot accept the dye. We need garments that are at least 65% polyester for the print to read correctly, with 100% polyester producing the most saturated, vibrant results. Performance athletic apparel, sublimated jerseys, and polyester scarves are perfect substrates. The second category is polymer-coated blanks: ceramic mugs with a polyester coating, aluminum photo panels with a polymer surface, polyester-coated phone cases, mouse pads, license plates, MDF panels, and dozens of other manufactured blanks. We stock the most common blanks but can source virtually anything sublimatable from our suppliers within a few days.

When sublimation is the right tool, nothing else competes. Photo-quality color reproduction at 300 DPI with full continuous tone — gradients, photographs, and subtle skin tones all reproduce flawlessly. Permanent bond that survives commercial laundry, dishwashers, scratches, and abrasion that would destroy any other print method. Soft hand on apparel because there is zero ink layer to feel — the polyester fibers themselves hold the color, so the garment moves and breathes exactly the same as a blank. Outdoor durable on metal panels, where the dye is sealed under the polymer coating. We do sublimation for sports teams ordering full-jersey custom designs, photographers selling printed photo panels, corporate gift programs producing branded mugs and tumblers, and trade-show clients producing all-over-printed tablecloths and banners. If your application matches sublimation, send us your file at 300 DPI and we will quote.

Sublimation Capabilities

Photo-quality permanent print on polyester apparel and polymer-coated blanks.

🎯

Permanent Dye Bond

The dye becomes part of the substrate at the molecular level. Cannot scratch off, wash off, or wear down because it is not a layer on top — it is the surface itself. Survives industrial laundry and dishwashers.

📷

Photo-Quality Color

300 DPI continuous-tone printing with full gradient and photographic reproduction. Skin tones, sunsets, and subtle color transitions reproduce flawlessly. Perfect for photographer prints and art reproductions.

🧼

Soft Hand on Apparel

Zero ink layer means zero added hand to the garment. Polyester athletic wear, performance jerseys, and sublimated tees move and breathe exactly the same as a blank. No coating, no stiffness, no cracking.

All-Over Garment Printing

Sublimation can cover an entire garment edge-to-edge in a single pass — full-front, full-back, sleeves, and seams included. Perfect for cycling jerseys, soccer kits, hockey sweaters, and full-print event tees.

Hard Goods Blanks

Ceramic mugs, aluminum photo panels, mouse pads, phone cases, license plates, MDF coasters, and dozens of polymer-coated blanks. We stock common items and source specialty blanks within days.

🌹

Outdoor Durable

On metal photo panels and license plates, the dye sits under the polymer coating, so the print is rated for years of outdoor use without fading. The right call for memorial signs and exterior photo displays.

What We Sublimate

Polyester apparel and polymer-coated hard goods, in any quantity.

How to Order Sublimation Printing

From your file to a permanently dyed product in five business days.

1

Send Art & Substrate Spec

Upload your design at 300 DPI minimum and tell us the substrate (polyester garment style or sublimation blank type). We will confirm material compatibility and quote within one business day.

2

Approve Color Proof

Sublimation colors shift slightly between screen and substrate, so we send a color proof showing how the print will read on the actual material. We can adjust saturation and contrast before final production.

3

Print & Heat-Press

Design printed onto sublimation transfer paper with calibrated dye inks. Substrate aligned and heat-pressed at 380-400F under pressure for 60-90 seconds. Dye sublimates into the substrate during the press cycle.

4

Inspect & Ship

Every piece inspected for color match and full-coverage transfer. Mugs and ceramics packed in protective foam. Garments folded and counted. Local pickup or nationwide shipping with tracking included.

File Requirements

Sublimation needs at-least 300 DPI source files. Color is best matched in RGB and we color-correct on press. Polyester content matters — substrates need at least 65% polyester. Ceramic must be coated (we stock blanks). Provide art at actual printed dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about pricing, turnaround, files, and capabilities.

Why does sublimation only work on polyester?

The sublimation process relies on dye gas bonding to polyester polymer chains at high temperature. Cotton fibers do not accept the dye gas because their cellulose structure cannot form the molecular bond. When we sublimate onto a 50/50 cotton/poly blend, only the polyester fibers receive the dye, so the print looks washed out and faded. We need at least 65% polyester for acceptable results, with 100% polyester producing the most saturated print. The same molecular bonding requirement applies to hard goods, which is why ceramic mugs and aluminum panels require a polymer coating to be sublimatable.

How permanent is a sublimation print?

As permanent as the substrate itself. Because the dye becomes part of the polyester fibers or polymer coating at the molecular level, you cannot scratch it off, wash it off, or wear it down. Sublimated polyester apparel survives industrial laundry programs that destroy screen-printed and DTF prints in weeks. Sublimated mugs are fully dishwasher and microwave safe. Sublimated photo panels survive years of outdoor exposure when properly UV-coated. The only failure mode is the substrate itself wearing out before the print does.

Can you sublimate on cotton T-shirts?

No, not directly. Cotton fibers cannot accept sublimation dye, and any attempt to sublimate on cotton produces a washed-out print that fades to nothing within a few washes. For cotton garments we recommend DTG, DTF, or screen printing depending on the application. There is a workaround called sublimation-on-cotton using a special polymer pre-coat (similar to a primer) that lets sublimation dye bond to the surface, but the result has a noticeable hand and is not as durable as true sublimation. We will recommend the right process for your fabric.

How does sublimation compare to DTG and DTF?

Sublimation is permanent and has zero hand on polyester, but only works on polyester (and polymer blanks). DTG works on cotton with the softest hand of any print method but requires pre-treatment for darks and is less wash-durable than sublimation on polyester. DTF works on any fabric including polyester with a slightly raised hand and excellent wash durability, somewhere between DTG and sublimation. For polyester athletic wear we always recommend sublimation. For cotton tees, DTG is best. For mixed fabrics, sports jerseys with logos, or hat decoration, DTF is the right tool.

Do you stock blanks or do I supply them?

We stock the most common sublimation blanks: 11oz and 15oz ceramic mugs, white polyester tees in adult and youth sizes, mouse pads, aluminum photo panels in standard sizes, license plates, and a selection of hard-good promotional items. For specialty blanks (custom-shaped panels, unusual mug sizes, polyester scarves, all-over print apparel), we source from our trusted blank suppliers within a few business days. You can also supply your own blanks — just confirm the polymer coating or polyester content with us before shipping so we can verify sublimation compatibility.

Can sublimation reproduce photographs?

Yes — sublimation is the gold standard for photographic prints on hard goods and polyester. The 300 DPI continuous-tone process reproduces gradients, skin tones, and subtle color transitions flawlessly, producing prints comparable to professional photo paper but on durable mugs, panels, and apparel. Photographers regularly use our sublimation service for limited-edition aluminum photo panels, ceramic photo mugs, and polyester photo tapestries. Send us your highest-resolution file (300 DPI minimum at the printed size) and we will color-correct on press for the best possible reproduction.
